Why November

When the whole city turns purple

We both grew up under these trees. Every November, Pretoria’s streets go soft and purple, and every student in the city swears that a blossom landing on your head means you will pass your exams. We couldn’t think of a better time to promise each other forever.

This little site has everything you need for the day. Mostly, though, we just want you there.

Amara & Theo

How we got here

Our story, in three chapters

Flames over the coals of a braai
Menlo Park, 2019

Chapter one

The braai

We met at a friend’s birthday braai. Theo was on the fire, and Amara was the only guest who offered to help, mostly because she didn’t trust him with the chops. We talked until the coals went cold, then waited two whole weeks for the other one to message first.

Chapter two

The distance

A year in, Theo took a job in Cape Town. Eighteen months of Sunday-night video calls and early flights booked on sale taught us we would rather be tired together than apart. He came home in 2022, and we moved into a small place with a garden.

Chapter three

The question

Theo carried the ring for three weeks waiting for the perfect moment. In the end he asked halfway up our Saturday trail while Biscuit, our rescue pup, tried to eat a stick. Amara said yes before he had finished the question.

while you’re here,

Where to see the jacarandas

  1. The Union Buildings gardens

Go early with a takeaway coffee and the whole purple city is at your feet.

  2. Herbert Baker Street, Groenkloof

Home of Pretoria’s rare white jacarandas, dozens of them up one winding road. Drive it slowly.

  3. Menlo Park on a Sunday

Where the braai happened. Every second garden has a dog in it.

  4. Hatfield

Students dodging blossoms for luck, and good coffee on every corner.

Good to know

Your questions

Can I bring a plus one?

If your invitation says “and guest”, absolutely, and the RSVP form will ask for their name. Otherwise we are keeping it small, and we are so grateful you understand.

Are children welcome?

We love your little ones, but this one is adults-only, apart from our nieces and nephews in the bridal party. Think of it as a night off.

What about a November thunderstorm?

Pretoria loves a four o’clock storm in November, so we have a plan: the ceremony moves into the barn and nothing else changes. Bring a light jacket for the evening.

Will Biscuit really be there?

For the ceremony, yes, in a lilac bow tie. He goes home with Theo’s brother before dinner, because he has strong opinions about lamb.

When do you need our RSVP?

By 1 October 2027, so the caterers can plan. If something changes after you reply, fill in the form again and the latest answer counts.

Kindly reply by 1 October

Will you join us?

(please do, our caterer has started asking)

Will you be there?
This is a demo, so nothing is sent anywhere.
